Dancing Poetry Festival Opens

Submissions accepted January 1-May 15 (postmark date)

Our Dancing Poetry Festival Poetry Contest opened January 1, 2013 and closes with a postmark date of May 15, 2013. Our contest offers over $1000 in prizes, with 3 Grand Prize Winners choreographed, costumed and performed at the Dancing Poetry Festival at the glorious California Palace of the Legion of Honor’s Florence Gould Theater in San Francisco’s beautiful Lincoln Park overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.

Prizes include 3 Grand Prizes with $100 each, 6 First Prizes with $50 each, 12 Second Prizes with $25 each and 30 Third Prizes with $10 each. All prize winning poets will be invited to read their prize winning poem at the podium. If the rules to the contest have been misplaced, then please look on our website at www.dancingpoetry.com.

When a poem really strikes our fancy, sometimes it becomes the premier piece for Natica Angilly’s Poetic Dance Theater Company for the year, with credits to the poet of coarse. We have taken Grand Prize Winning Poems around the world to Greece, China, Nicaragua and many more countries. We also perform on both the east and west coasts of the USA, and sometimes in between.

In 2012, the poem, Artist Statement by Tanya Joyce of Emoryville, CA, became the theme of the year. We have performed this prize winning poem at Rakkasah East in New Jersey in November and again for the January Alameda Art Show at the Alameda Museum in January, 2013. Artists’ Statement became the theme of the Artists Embassy January Art Show at the Alameda Museum this year. The poem and the story of the development of the choreography was featured in Open Exchange Magazine, Oct.-Dec., 2012, issue, complete with color photos, including the photo above.  We hope to continue to feature this act during the rest of the year.

Please enter your poem and perhaps it will be featured in 2014 when we go to Japan. Who knows?

Artists Embassy International’s  Alameda Museum Art Show, 2013

January 19, 2013, 11:30-3:30 was the time and date for our get-the-year-started Meet the Artists Reception and Gala at the Alameda Museum in Alameda, CA. And a Gala it was! We had artists telling us about their art, poets from Artists Embassy International, Alameda Island Poets and Poets of the Vineyards and Alameda Community Learning Center recited, and performances by three dance groups, one duet and one marvelous impromptu dance rendition of a recited poem. Food was served throughout the afternoon. Food for eyes, thought, soul and spirit was abundant everywhere you turned. For luminous color photos from this afternoon, please visit www.dancingpoetry.com to relive this extravagant and friendly afternoon.

Artists Embassy International is proud to announce that our performers of poets, artists and dancers included people ages 13-89 (that we know about.) Artists were mostly from the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, but we also had artists from China and Canada displayed. Artists were from Artists Embassy International membership plus invited guests from Alameda Island Poets, National League of American Pen Women. Dancers included Dancers of the Pharoahs, Banat El Hogar, Natica Angilly’s Poetic Dance Theater Company, a mother/daughter duet with Eco Spirit Project, and an impromptu dance to Katherine Wilson’s poem by Jan Dietrich.

Artist Statement poem by Tanya Joyce, performed by Natica Angilly’s Poetic Dance Theater Company, amid the art of the Artists Embassy International January Art Show at the Alameda Museum, Alameda, CA.

“I am a crazy quilt / A pattern of crackle glazes / Filled with electric charge / Behind spring flowers./

I I am scraps of velvet, / Snippets of desire / Joined in ragged shapes, / Edged with scallops, / Fingering my life...”

This is what filled our afternoon of poetry, dance, art, friends, contacts, food and enjoyment.

Tanya Joyce, far left, tells of her art, the Labyrinth (large piece left) and the dancers (brown background ). She and Natica have an “Artists’ Statement” workshop scheduled for January 26 in this Gallery. Some of Judy Hardin Cheung’s Artist as Art exhibit can be seen on the posts, some of Natica’s masks are between the Labyrinth and Tanya’s Dancers. Between the two Dancers is the exhibit showing the Artists Statement article in Open Exchange with copies for those who wanted.

Thank you to all of the performers, staff, and organizers of the Artists Embassy International January Art Show for presenting such a colorful, varied afternoon program of uplifting intercultural, multi-genre entertainment.
