ARTISTS EMBASSY INTERNATIONAL a 503(c) all volunteer arts organization “furthering inter-cultural understanding and peace through the universal language of the arts” founded 1951
HEADQUARTERS Natica Angilly: President
Artist Embassy International was created in 1951 by Althya Youngman. She believed that the arts transcend cultures. She had toured the world as a singer/pianist and saw that the arts bring people together in harmony. Part of her epiphany came about while studying with Mahatma Gandhi in India.
As an example, In 1985, Dr. Kenneth Kuanling Fan brought a contingency of poets from Taiwan to
San Francisco. Artists Embassy International hosted them at a special event. Performing would be a concert pianist from China that Althya was mentoring. At that time Taiwain and China were not on good terms. The pianist was reluctant to perform. He said he would not be welcomed by the poets from Taiwan. When he came to the piano, the audience was not very responsive. We were all tense. Then he started to play. The energy in the room changed. When he was finished, the Taiwan poets all went up to congratulate him and shake his hand. Harmony had been restored for that evening. The Taiwan poets and the pianist from China went home with positive thoughts of one another. This type off friendly interchange has happened many times around the world since 1951.
Althya was speaking with Father Alfred Boeddeker one afternoon and he said, "The arts are the oil in the machinery of mankind, for man cannot live by bread alone, but must have beauty to feed the soul".
With that in mind and knowing the arts bring people together, Althya knew that AEI was on the correct path.
Artists Embassy International is solely support by donations. The community of art lovers and those that believe in our ideals and enjoy our productions/exhibits, have been very generous.
With the idea of promoting harmony using poetry fused with dance, Natica and Richard Angilly brought together dancers from a variety of dance styles to form The Poetic Dance Theater Company. Dancing to poetry is an ancient art form brought up to date by choreographer Natica Angilly and her poet husband, Richard Angilly, Poet Laureate Man of Letters. The company has traveled world wide performing by invitation across the USA as well as Beijing, in Taipei three times, London, Rome, Budapest, Osaka and Guatemala City. Natica has created a special dance language for poetic dance. Her choreographic instincts are beautiful and unusual. Each dance has it's own choreography, costumes and props. This makes for an exciting performance. The dance company is solely dedicated to the performance of poetry. They are perhaps the only dance company that never dances without poetry.
The arts know no borders. This dance company has brought people of diverse cultures together in better understanding of each other. They stay in hotels of the country in areas where the people are (not tourist) so they can mingle. They have always been treated royally, perhaps because they are not expecting to find "America" in other countries. They travel as Ambassadors of the Arts. Their focus is to promote harmony and understanding.
Natica created The Dancing Poetry Festival to encourage dance companies to perform to poetry and poets to write for dance. This will stretch their creativity. Natica has choreographed dances to poetry that also included pieces of visual art. The different genres of art compliment each other. The Dancing Poetry Festival is now in it's 22nd year. There has been a mix of dance companies representing Thailand, India, Hawaii, China, the Middle East, ballet, modern, hip hop and folkloric. In between acts,
award winning poets read their poetry. All of his makes for an enjoyable afternoon for the whole family.
